Feral Pigeons can become a pest in a range of different environments from farm yards to commercial buildings. Feral pigeons often find their way into properties where they seek shelter to roost or to nest. If left unmanaged they can rapidly increase in number and pose a significant risk to the health and safety of anyone within the property. Pigeon guano (faeces) can quickly build up in areas frequented by feral pigeons and not only is this unsightly but it can spread diseases such as salmonella and e.coli and also produces a slips and trips risk to anyone walking in the area. Pigeon guano has corrosive properties and can permanently stain and corrode buildings (stone and metal) or block infrastructure such as gutters. When pigeon guano is dry it can cause allergic reaction and breathing difficulty to humans. Feral pigeon nests can also pose the same risks to health and safety as well as harbouring pests such as mites and fleas which can then become another pest issue. As well as posing risks to health and safety, feral pigeons can also generate noise and odour which is a nuisance and can have a negative impact on businesses.

At SLR Pest Management i carry out feral pigeon control with several methods of control. Shooting (controlled culls with the use of sub 12f lb air rifles) is the main method of control and is carried out if the environment allows it to be done safely. Trapping can also be carried out with the use of live catch pigeon traps. Another method of feral pigeon control is exclusion (bird proofing). I would recommend the necessary proofing measures to prevent pigeons from gaining access into the property such as bird spike, bird netting, strip curtains etc.
